The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says a State Penitentiary inmate seriously hurt a staff member, breaking the employee's nose and eye socket.
Corrections says the inmate punched the employee, knocked the person to the ground, and continued with the assault.
Responding staff members removed the inmate from the area.
Corrections says the staff member was treated at a local hospital and has since been released.
Reports will be provided to the Lancaster County Attorney for any charging decisions..
The prison disciplinary process will be used with sanctions such as loss of good time, applied according to the rules and regulations.
