(Ames, IA) -- An Ames woman is facing animal neglect charges after nearly 30 cats were found living in horrible conditions.

Investigators say the cats living in 42-year-old Jennifer Thompson's apartment had a number of illnesses and were living amongst "excessive animal waste".

27 cats were rescued from her apartment on December 13th and taken to the Ames Animal Shelter.

One five-month-old kitten had to be euthanized after it contracted a fatal illness.

Thompson is charged with animal neglect with serious injury or death and animal neglect with injury.

She is being held in the Story County Jail on a $6,000 cash only bond.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 9th.
