(Polk County, IA) -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office is releasing the name of a pedestrian, hit and killed this week. The Sheriff's Office says 41-year-old Joshua Laird of Des Moines was hit Monday night around 8 :15, as he was walking in the 4300 block of NW 2nd Street. Laird received medical aid from witnesses to the accident, EMS arrived and took over the medical care. Despite those efforts, Laird died on scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate the victim was walking in the traveled portion of the southbound lanes of NW 2nd Street when he was hit. Evidence gathered at the scene and statements by witnesses indicate the area of the accident was not well-lit and the victim was dressed in dark clothing. The occupants of the vehicle that struck the victim remained on the scene and are cooperating with investigators.
