(Iowa) -- A new 50-state study by a national financial website show Iowans added a lot of personal loan debt last year.

A national survey from WalletHub shows Iowans increased their average personal loan debt by 15.72% between the third quarter of 2022 and the third quarter of 2023, the second highest of any state. The survey finds the average personal loan debt for Iowans is $11,142. However, WalletHub says Iowans tend to have have lower credit card debt when compared to residents of other states.

Montana came in at the top of the list of states whose residents added the most personal loan debt during that time. Alaska came in at the bottom of the list.
