Nebraska Inmate Serving Life Sentence Dies

Nebraska Corrections says 88-year-old Richard Holtan died at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.

Holtan’s sentence began on February 9th, 1976.

He was serving a life sentence for first degree murder out of Douglas County, convicted of killing a bartender and wounding another person during a robbery, in what was originally a capital case, with an initial death sentence.

Corrections says the cause of death has not yet been determined, but Holtan was being treated for a medical condition.

As is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of law enforcement, a grand jury will investigate under Nebraska law.
