Victim, Suspect Killed in Shooting at Perry High School, 5 Others Injured

(Perry, IA) -- Two people are dead, one victim and the suspected shooter, and 5 others are hurt after a shooting at Perry High School this morning.

The suspect has been identified as 17 year-old Dylan Butler, a student at Perry High School. Police responded following an alert indicating an active shooter event at the school. Perry High School shares a building with Perry Middle School. Investigators say Butler was found dead at the scene of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. One victim, a 6th grader from Perry Middle School was killed, and 5 others were taken to hospitals in Des Moines. Those five include 4 students and a school administrator.

Investigators say an improvised explosive device was also found inside Perry High School, though responders were able to disarm the device quickly.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
