Christmas Rain Doesn't Do Much To Ease Drought

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Even with all the rain that fell across Iowa over the long Christmas weekend--as much as two inches on Christmas Day--this week's drought conditions haven't changed much.

This week's U.S. Drought Monitor Map still shows extreme drought from Northeast, through Southeast, and across into West-Central Iowa.

There are some drought-free areas in Northwest and far Eastern Iowa.

The new map, which doesn't include any of the snow that fell Wednesday, shows 97 percent of Iowa under drought or near-drought conditions.

Some part of Iowa has been under some level of drought for more than three-and-a-half years.
