(Des Moines, IA) -- Michael Young of the Iowa VFW says even if you simply drive by Gray's Lake on Des Moines' south side this weekend, the newly installed 3,000 US flags make an impression. He says up close, it's a somber reminder of the terrorist attacks September 11, 2001. Volunteers today (Friday) placed 3,000 flags near the walking trail on the west side of Gray's Lake.

Young is asking for more volunteers to help remove the flags on Tuesday.

The annual event is organized by WHO Radio and our IHeart Radio sister stations in Des Moines.
