(Des Moines, IA) -- The 16th annual Hunger Fight is underway in Des Moines. Hundreds of volunteers with Meals from the Heartland are taking turns packaging meals for the hungry, which will be distributed to impoverished populations in multiple countries, including Zambia, El Salvador, and Haiti. The event is underway through Saturday, September 2nd at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines.

The non-profit organization is hoping to package four million meals during the event.

Executive Director Greg DeHaai says they need 1,500 volunteers to reach the goal. The shifts are two hours each and DeHaai says there are still opportunities available.
