(Chicago, IL) -- Illinois is receiving more than $1 billion in federal funding to support high-speed Internet access in the state.
The Federal Communications Commission says more than 7% of the country can't get service.
The funding comes from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program.
This grant will focus on delivering upgrades to ensure that every community across the state has 21st-century broadband capability.
The U.S. Commerce Department is giving more than 42 billion dollars nationwide through the High-Speed Internet Grant Program, which is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
It will also be used to repair, enhance, and expand broadband for schools with a focus on K-12 education.
The program hopes to connect every resident and small business to reliable, affordable high-speed internet by 2030.
