Northeast Iowa Apartment Building Evacuated

(Oelwein, IA) -- Parts of a 125-year-old brick apartment building in Oelwein, Iowa is vacated after a large section of bricks fell from the front wall.

Thirty-four apartments in the building known as the Hotel Mealey have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Structural engineers are inspecting the building, which is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Crews have already found large cracks in other areas of the four-story building as well as other structural issues inside.

Oelwein Police Chief Jeremy Logan says the property owner has been helping residents who did not immediately have another place to go to find other accommodations.

Surrounding roads, alleyways, and business below will be closed during the inspection.

It comes less than a month after an apartment building partially collapsed in Davenport, killing three people.
