A Symbol Of American Industrial History Visits Omaha/Council Bluffs

A rolling piece of railroad history will be on display later this week outside Charles Schwab Field for the College World Series that begins on Friday.

Thousands lined the Union Pacific "Overland Route" across Nebraska as the massive U. P. "Big Boy" Steam locomotive 4014 came into Omaha/Council Bluffs.

The locomotive and some classic streamlined passenger cars will be on the tracks across Cuming Street from the ballpark, what the railroad calls "Home Plate," symbolically in the shadow of U.P.'s downtown Omaha headquarters

Those locomotives especially played a huge role in WW II hauling troops and equipment to and from ports on both coasts.

The 4014 is part of the Omaha-based railroad's "Heritage Fleet" of vintage locomotives and passenger equipment, which is housed in Cheyenne.
