Des Moines Airport Expecting Busy Memorial Day Weekend And Summer

(Des Moines, IA) -- The Des Moines International Airport is ready for a busy Memorial Day weekend and summer.

The airport's Kayla Kovarna says "We have 29 nonstop routes being served this weekend and of course countless connections and destinations. Which means we have 176 scheduled departures, that's a 9% increase over Memorial Day weekend last year."

She says while they've been seeing increased travel already this week, they expect today Thursday and Monday to be the busiest days.

She says the airport is also preparing for pre-pandemic numbers of travelers this summer, rivalling 2019 which was a record breaking year.

The 23,000 people flying out between Thursday and Monday is a 23% increase from last Memorial Day weekend.

She says flyers this weekend will want to get to the airport an hour and a half to two hours early, especially if flights leave during peak travel times before 7:00 a.m. and in midafternoon.
