(Winterset, Iowa) -- Winterset High School Principal Cam Smith says he believes a powerful driver safety demonstration last week made a big impression on students. The mock crash near the school included real first responders including a helicopter. The goal of the demonstration was to show the potential consequences of drunk/distracted drivers.

Smith says parents were notified in January about the demonstration and students were told ahead of time as well.

Smith says teens often don't think they could ever get in a crash, and may be tempted to use a phone while driving. He says the goal is to show them that distracted driving can turn negative quickly.

He says they also reiterate to the students how much people care about them, want them to be safe, and look forward to the great things they'll do in the future.
