Two Nebraska Inmate Deaths This Week Investigated

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says 72-year old John Epting died at a Lincoln hospital.

He was an inmate at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.

Epting’s sentence began on November 20th, 2006.

He was serving a 25 to 40 year sentence on charges out of Lincoln County that included manslaughter and first degree assault.

While the cause of death has not yet been determined, Corrections says Epting was being treated for a medical condition.

As is the case whenever a person dies in law enforcement custody in Nebraska, a grand jury will investigate.

On Monday, Corrections said 62-year old Marty Nuzum had died at Bryan Medical Center-East.

He was also at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution serving a sentence that began in 2003.

He was serving a life sentence on charges out of Douglas County that included first degree murder.

While the cause of his death has not yet been determined, Nuzum was also being treated for a medical condition.
