(Altoona, IA) -- An elderly man is dead and and elderly woman is hospitalized after a fire at their home in Altoona on Sunday morning.
Neighbors are credited with saving the woman by pulling her out of a window of the burning home on SE 5th Avenue. Fire crews were called to a home around 2:40 a.m. and found the 71-year-old woman had already been rescued from a first story bedroom.
Crews then entered to home to find the 73-year-old man inside. He later died at the hospital.
The Altoona Fire Department was assisted by the Altoona Police Department, Des Moines Fire Department, Ankeny Fire Department, Bondurant Fire Department, Mitchellville Fire Department, Pleasant Hill Fire Department, Saylor Township Fire Department, and Mercy Ambulance.
The incident remains under investigation.
