(Lincoln, NE) -- The Nebraska Board of Regents takes another step toward lifting the ban on alcohol sales at University of Nebraska sporting events.

On Friday, the Board unanimously voted to allow each school’s chancellor and the system president to decide on alcohol sales at their home sporting events. A board resolution in 1999 prohibited the sale of alcohol on any University of Nebraska property. Friday’s decision reverses that policy and lays the foundation for allowing “campuses to consider the dispensing, sale, and consumption of alcoholic liquor at athletic or other campus events in specifically designated facilities and areas.”

NU System President Ted Carter says though, that alcohol won’t be sold at Memorial Stadium during the upcoming Husker football season. Carter says he will bring a proposal to sell alcohol at Memorial Stadium to the board before allowing those sales. “We’re not going to rush any decisions,” Carter said. There are currently eight other Big Ten programs that sell alcohol at games: Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers, Minnesota, and Illinois.

Also on Friday, the Board approved a plan to allow alcohol sales at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln March 5th-6th.
