Downtown Des Moines Gets New Speed Camera

(Des Moines, Iowa) -- Downtown Des Moines is getting a new speed camera to monitor an area with frequent complaints of high-speed driving.

The Des Moines Police Department says the camera will monitor the 1400 block of Grand Avenue, an area with regular complaints of excessive speed, high-speed driving, and street racing. Police say more than 40% of calls to the area between March 1st and August 1st of this year have been traffic related.

The camera will start issuing warnings starting at noon on Thursday for drivers going 11 miles an hour or more above the speed limit. The warning period expires September 4th, after which $65 citations will be issued for speeders.
