Two boys hospitalized after scooter-vs-car crash in Cedar Rapids

(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Two boys, ages 8 and 12 have life-threatening injuries after their scooter was hit by a car in Cedar Rapids. Police say the boys were hit around 4 yesterday near 15th Street and Mount Vernon Road SE. According to Witnesses and video evidence the boys ran a stop sign.

The boys are hospitalized at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Police say the boys were riding a single VeoRide electric scooter in the alley between 15th Street and Camburn Court SE and rode onto Mount Vernon Road SE and were hit by a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix travelling westbound on Mount Vernon Road SE.

Police say the driver of the car, 64-year-old Dennis Chandler of Cedar Rapids, currently is not facing charges in the accident. Police did cite Chandler for Driving While License Under Suspension and Failure to Provide Proof of Insurance.
