Iowa Lawmakers Pass Budget Bills as End Nears to Legislative Session

DES MOINES, Iowa - Money is being put in place to ensure Iowans have state services for the next year.

State lawmakers are wrapping up their business at the state capitol with a series of budget plans that go into effect in about a month and a half - July 1st.

Money is now in place for education, health care, transportation and improvements to water quality and public parks, among other things.

The biggest chunk of funding is about $2 billion that covers programs such as Medicaid, mental health and disability services and the Iowa Veteran's Home.

Funding has also been finalized as of Tuesday night for Agriculture, the state's court system and the Department of Corrections.

A separate measure known as the 'Back the Blue' bill passed the House Tuesday and will head to the governor's desk. It offers increased legal protections for officers and makes rioting a felony offense.

The Budget bills are also headed to Governor Kim Reynolds while state lawmakers will likely adjourn for the year in the next day or so.
