Ankeny Polling Site Evacuated After "Suspicious Device" Found

(Ankeny, Iowa) -- Ankeny Police say a polling center for today's special election had to be evacuated after a suspicious device was discovered.

Polk County Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald says the device, found outside the Lakeside Center, was similar to a pipe bomb. The Ankeny Police Department says the device has been, “made safe.”

Fitzgerald says they hope to re-open the Lakeside Center for voting soon, but until then people can vote at any other Ankeny polling place.

He says the incident did not affect the votes already cast at that location.
