Iowa Lottery Sales Strong During Pandemic, National Lotto's Way Down

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Lottery is experiencing a drop in the national Powerball and Mega Millions lotto games, but a spike in it's scratch off games.

The Gazette reports instant scratch games, which account for 71 percent of all sales, are ahead of last year's record pace for the Iowa Lottery.

Ticket sales and money going back to the state are running millions of dollars ahead of last year

COVID-19 and low interest rates are blamed for the slowdown in the national lottery ticket sales.

Lower interest rates lead to a slower buildup as the prize pools roll over when there is no winner. Powerball and Mega Millions jackets this year have only reached a fraction of the $15. billion they both reached in 2019.
