DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines Public Schools is postponing its meeting to discuss a benchmark for bringing students back to classrooms.
The meeting is being moved from tonight to Wednesday out of respect for the Jewish holy day Yom Kippur.
The school board says it didn't realize the conflict when the schedule was made last week.
It's been consulting with local health experts to determine a COVID-19 policy to allow in-person learning.
The board has been considering levels that would still be different from state requirements.
Des Moines has been holding classes online in conflict with state guidelines, and could be penalized by the Department of Education.
The district currently plans to stagger the start dates for in-person classes, with high school students not scheduled to return until November.
As of now, pre-kindergarten could return Oct. 12, kindergarten through fifth grade could return Oct. 19 and middle schools would return Oct. 26. High school would return to classroom learning on Nov. 10.
The return dates will only happen if COVID-19 levels meet the district's benchmark.
Wednesday's meeting is schedule for 5 p.m.
