Des Moines City Council To Resume Meeting Over Ammunition Purchase

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Des Moines City Council is resuming a meeting on Zoom Wednesday at 9 am after it ended abruptly Monday after veering out of control.

The city was unable to mute combative remarks by one person after the comment period ended Monday, which prevented the council from conducting business.

The council is considering a $99,000 purchase of police ammunition, which is opposed by some community activists. Des Moines Black Lives Matter is encouraging its members to join the meeting.

The ammunition would be used for officer training and use in critical situations such as active shooters, bombings and civil disobedience.

It would be used by the Metro Special Tactics and Response (S.T.A.R.), specialized unit within the Homeland Security Bureau that responds to a wide variety of critical incidents.
