Des Moines City Council Moving Forward With Fleur Drive Median Planting

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Des Moines City Council is moving forward on a major road beautification project.

The council's meeting Monday morning in a work session to look at a plan to revitalize Fleur Drive with new plants in 17 center medians between Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Leland Avenue south of Des Moines International Airport.

The project is set to be partially funded with private money through the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. The city will cover the cost of irrigation and removal of current plant material and soil.

The first phase of plant installation is scheduled for 2021 after the city finalizes funding for the project. The 17 center medians would have all new plants installed by 2023.

Portions of Fleur Drive are already being rebuilt, including the northbound lanes between Watrous Avenue and Gray's Lake.
