Des Moines Roosevelt High Baseball Team Kneels During Anthem

DES MOINES, Iowa - The entire Roosevelt High School baseball team took a knee during the national anthem Monday afternoon before a season-opening game against Ankeny Centennial at Principal Park in Des Moines.

The gesture comes while protests and community outreach continue across the country after the death of George Floyd and other African Americans killed by police.

The Des Moines School District, which includes Roosevelt High, is one of the most diverse in the state. The Ankeny Centennial baseball team did not kneel during the anthem.

The kneeling by Roosevelt players received national news coverage, including from The Hill.

Iowa became the first state to bring back high school sports when baseball and softball teams around the state began playing games Monday. It marked the first high school sports activity since the coronavirus shut down all sports in the state in mid-March.
