25 Arrests, Damaged Businesses in Downtown Des Moines

DEA MOINES,Iowa - Many businesses in the downtown Des Moines Court Avenue entertainment district are damaged with broken windows and graffiti after overnight looting by protesters.

Police arrested at least 25 people between 2:30 and 4:00 a.m., when the businesses received most of the damage.

Police deployed tear gas after they reported people breaking into downtown grocery store.

The late night disruption followed protests Saturday night that saw police used tear gas and flash bangs to disperse crowds after windows were broken at the Polk County Courthouse, and when crowds gathered at the state capital building.

The protests were in response to the killing of George Floyd, a black man who was handcuffed and in the custody of Minneapolis Police Memorial Day.
