Des Moines City Council Looking at Security Cameras in Sky-walks

DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines City Council is considering a project to improve safety in the city's downtown skywalks.

This afternoon, the council will consider providing a $25,000 grant to help pay for the installation of security cameras in the skywalks.

The collaborative effort would include Polk County donating another $25,000, while Operation Downtown would contribute $125,000.

The Skywalk Association wold take care of the ongoing costs of $700 a month.

The action comes after a couple was assaulted by a group of juveniles in the skywalk in October.

The city's portion of the financing for the cameras would come from its general fund.

The public portion of today's meeting starts at 4:15 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
