Iowa Public Safety Department warns of phone scam

(DES MOINES, Iowa)  The Iowa Department of Public Safety is warning residents about a scam, in which callers say they're Special Agents with the Division of Criminal Investigation,  looking into a lawsuit.

The caller claims to be collecting money on behalf of the Department of Public Safety, and they may "spoof" your caller ID, so it appears they're from the D-P-S.

Authorities say it's a scam.    If you've lost money through it, you're asked to tell police.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says calls can also be reported to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office Hotline at (515) 281-5926 or (888) 777-4590.

The DPS is also offering some tips to prevent being targeted by fraudulent calls.

  • If you get a call from someone who claims they are collecting money on behalf of the DPS—even if a caller ID device shows the DPS—hang up.
  • The DPS does not demand immediate payment via prepaid debit cards.
  • Do not provide or confirm personal information or financial information to anyone who calls.
