Johnston, Iowa woman leaves country, kids found home alone

(Johnston, Iowa)  A Johnston woman's charged with child endangerment, accused of leaving her children home alone, while she traveled to Germany.

Police have charged 30-year old Erin Lee Macke with four counts of child endangerment and one count of making a firearm available to a person under age 21.

She's accused of leaving the country, without providing child care for her four kids, ages 12, 12, 7 and 6.

Police officers were called to Macke's residence September 21st, to conduct a welfare check, after being told kids had been left alone.

They found four children alone, and determined their mother left the country the day before, and was not scheduled to return until October 1st.   Investigators say no child care arrangements had been made.

Police contacted Macke in Germany and ordered her to return.   She returned today (Thursday), was arrested and taken to the Polk County Jail.   The children have been placed in the temporary custody of extended family members.
