Des Moines Fireworks: Zero citations, hundreds of complaints

There were zero citations issued in Des Moines for illegal use of fireworks over the Fourth of July week.

In many neighborhoods fireworks banged and popped for days before and after the small, legal July 4 window for fireworks use, only a 6 hour window for legally using fireworks.

Des Moines residents at the city council Monday spoke out both for, and against fireworks.

Karen Markus says it was like living in a war zone.

Dartanyan Brown says fireworks nearly set his house on fire.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie speaks for a friend.

Other Des Moines residents are adamant about their right to use fireworks, like Chris Flannery.

The city council didn't take any action Monday night, but they plan a workshop session on the issue next month to talk about how to respond.

Several council members blame the Iowa state legislature for creating this situation that cities have to deal with, and most council members say the city doesn't have enough officers to do an adequate job of policing a ban, if one were enacted.
