Seth Bartman, Survivalist, was our special guest just after the 7:30 news. Seth is part of our "Van & Bonnie Eat Other People's Meals" every Tuesday schedule. Seth is with Watchmen of Iowa...The Patriot Solution to Securing Our Nation and Our Families. Their whole philosphy is "Be Prepared". He brought in MRE (Meals Ready to Eat). Van had spaghetti and I had chili and macaroni! They were pretty good! Just add water to the special heating bag and the water immediately begins to boil and cook the meal in just a few minutes! Linda Funk, with Iowa Soy Foods was our special guest after the 8:30 news. Linda is always looking for ways for us to add soy to our diet...a good source of protein other than meat. She made shamrock shakes for us using soy milk and mint chocolate chip ice cream. She made hot chocolate by warming chocolate soy milk in a cup in the microwave. Our special guests this morning were Becky Beach of the Iowa Barnstormers and Erick Branstad of Iowa's Healthiest State Initiative. They have teamed up to bring a special event to Des Moines! It will be called "Running of the Bulls" and will feature a 5,000 yard run (approximately at 5K) with the Iowa Barnstormer players and will benefit the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative! The event is May 11th and will consist of three groups...walkers, joggers and competitive runners. It starts at Wells Fargo Arena, across the Center Street bridge, thru the East Village, up to the Capitol and then back to Wells Fargo Arena, inside the arena and cross the touchdown line on the Iowa Barnstormer field! Entry fee of $35.00 includes a Barnstormer ticket, a t-shirt and more, and you can register at www.iowahealthieststate.com or at www.theiowabarnstormers.com. There will also be a Kids Zone for the kids to learn a routine to perform at half-time of a Barnstormers game.

April is National Donate Life Month, so our induction into the Van & Bonnie Hall of Heroes was very timely. Sarah Bushnell donated a kidney to her father, David Pederson, and in the routine prep work for her donation, the team doing her CAT scan discovered several aneurysms....One Donation...Two Lives Saved! You can hear the entire interview on our Hall of Heroes page on the WHO Radio website. It may be a couple of days before it's uploaded. Nicole Patterson, the Transplant Coordinator for Iowa Methodist also joined us in the studio. There is always a long list of people waiting for organ donations. One thing you can do to help is to check "organ donor" on your driver's license. If you want information on how to be a "living donor", go to www.iowamethodist.org and click on "kidney donation".

Maestro Joseph Guinta was our special guest this morning just after the 8:30 news. The Des Moines Symphony is celebrating 75 years in existence this year and for the first 30 years, they were supported by the Drake University Symphony. To honor Drake, their program this weekend is "All About Drake"! It's going to be an awesome program...check out all the details at www.dmsymphony.org. Tickets are also available on their website. Performances will be Saturday night at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 2:30.

Rich Fellingham and Hal Pittman joined us in the studio this morning just after the 8:30 news. Rich has been the interim President/CEO of Special Olympics and his replacement has finally arrived. Hal Pittman, a former Rear Admiral with the US Navy has accepted the position and his family is in the process of moving from Florida to Des Moines, Iowa. Hal is really looking forward too working with the Special Olympics athletes as well as all the great sponsors and staff of the Special Olympics. If you meet him, please give him a great Iowa welcome!

Hy-Vee's Whole Health Experience in Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center will be Saturday, April 6th, 9AM-3PM. Activities will include seminars by Hy-Vee's dietitians, samples and healthy cooking demonstrations from Hy-Vee's Dietitians and Chefs. Celebrity speakers include Bobby Deen, host of The Cooking Channel's "Not My Mama's Meals". Gluten free itmes and/or food sensitivities will be a topic of discussion as well.
