A lot of people in our area know Eileen Wixted, some for her work as an anchor and reporter on WHO TV, and some because of the successful business she built after she left channel 13.  Many people in the limelight in the business world have needed some training in dealing with the media.  It
was interesting today to hear how her company has helped them get that
training.  Secret:  Eileen came to the studio at 5am a week early because I didn’t communicate to her well enough that it was THIS Wednesday.  She was very gracious about it, although I owe her not one, but now two favoors.

What an honor to have Jeff Chelsvig fill in for Bonnie for all four hours today.  Jeff is the head man at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines, and what a tremendous time of growth and entertainment it has been. Des Moines is fortunate to have him.  We talked about the paast and what to expect in the future with the Civic Center and Des Moines entertainment. Great thanks to Jeff for what he does for the community and for sharing his early hours this morning.

Hi folks!  Van here taking over the blog writing this week since Bonnie is gone.  She’ll be back Monday the 13^th.  Yes, I’m aware I’m supposed to include a double vowelled letter somewhere for those of you that want extra bonus points.  I’ll have to think awhile as to where I want to puut it.  Today, Sue Danielson, from our WHO Radio newsroom filled in for Bonnie.  Sue and I have each been here for a long time so it was fun to work with her this morning.  I remember the first time I heard here, many, many years ago, thinking, “Wow! We need to get her on WHO Radio.” She has a fabulous voice and delivery and we’ve been fortunate to have her here all these years!  Thanks Sue!

Unbelievable!  More snow in May and more schools cancelled!  It's not right to have too use your 4-wheel drive in May!

Robert Z Grant of Broadway's Next Hit Musical joined us in the studio just after the 8:30AM news.  The performance is going on now thru May 12th at the Temple for the Performing Arts.  It has a lot of audience participation, so it's a different show every night!  Robert is an Iowa "boy"...so go out and support him!

Mark Wilson of Milo had a snow piled tree branch fall on his vehicle this morning...he was nice enough to send us a picture!

Thank you for all of the texts, phone calls, facebook replies, etc. on the weather this morning!  The overall concensus...."Yuck!"  I've been doing the school cancellations for almost 19 years and I don't think I've ever had to cancel school in May for snow!

Reminder....the Van & Bonnie/Nobbies Nose Glasses Day at the Iowa Cubs has been rescheduled for Monday, May 6th, 12:05PM!  The weather forecast is calling for sunshine and 68 degrees!  The first 1,000 people thruu the gates get free Nobbies Van & Bonnie Nose Glasses!  We have a few pairs of Nose Glasses at the front desk of WHO Radio, 2141 Grand.  Stop by and pick some up!

Kevin Vinchattle and Lois White of the Iowa Egg Council were our special guests this morning in honor of May Egg Month!  They announced the grand prize winners in the Iowa Egg Council Recipe Contest:  Alisa Ward with Nutty Whiskey Ice Cream, Beth Seuferer with Artichoke and Bacon Risotto Strata and Trey Moore with Strawberry 'n' Mousse Surprise.  Recipe packets can be obtained by calling 1-877-Iowa Egg or by going to www.IowaEgg.org.

Just after 8:30 this morning, we inducted Dr. Dick Hettinger of Iowa Mission of Mercy into our Van & Bonnie Hall of Heroes!  The Iowa Mission of Mercy this year will be held at t he Iowa State Fairgrounds in the Varied Industries Building on October 18th & 19th.  It is free dental care for those that can't afford it.  There is no paper work to be filled out, just go out and get in line.  There will be approximately 200 to 300 dentists as well as staff on site!  Dental care begins at 5AM.

Moore Iowa State Fair Grandstand tickets to give away tomorrow as well as Carol Burnett tickets and Blank Park Zoo passes.

It's a Tuesday....that means Van & Bonnie eat other people's meals!  This morning we called Iowa Methodist Hospital just after 6:30am and ordered a breakfast just like any Unity Point Health patient would do.  We spoke with a delightful person...Jamie Prangler...she took our order and repeated it back to us and then we asked to have it delivered at 7:30AM.  Chef Tim Davis of Iowa Methodist and Laura Ippen, Sustainability Coordinator for Unity Point Health delivered our hot, delicious breakfast right on time!  I had a fruit, yogurt and granola plate, while Van had a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Sandwich, scrambled eggs, Cheerios, bacon, sausage, shredded hashbrowns, tomato juice, apricot nectar, skiim milk (for his Cheerios) and Apple Pie.  And yes, he ate every bit of it!  Next week it's "Meals From the Heartland". 

Tomorrow morning we will have Blank Park Zoo tickets, Carol Burnett tickets and Iowa State Fair Grandstand tickets to give away.  We'll also be inducting another person into the Van & Bonnie Hall of Heroes.

Just after the 7:30AM news, Jana Rieker and Tim Thorne, board members of the West Des Moines Girls Softball League joined us in the studio.  We had made arrangements for Bob Quinn to meet us in the studio during the 7:30 news.  Jana and Tim had a huge surprise for Bob.  Bob has been doing maintenance on the West Des Moines softball fields for almost 20 years (I think he spends more time there than here at WHO Radio)!  He has been busy working on getting a brand new field ready for play and tomorrow morning they are going to unveil the new field as Quinn Field.  What an honor for Bob!  Congraatulations!

Congratulations to Mark Husson...the grand prize winner in our Hy-Vee contest this week!  Mark will have a Hy-Vee Chef coming to his home to prepare a wonderful Angus Beef dinner for his family!
