It’s nice to hear from you in your letters, emails and phone calls. You should be advised that “WE WON! WE WON! WE WON!” as far as a dove season is concerned!

We began in August 2010, signing up over 500 signatures that went on to the Legislature, both House and Senate, and signed by the Governor who gave us a clear win for having a dove season here in Iowa! It should be noted that the Iowa DNR Commission added that “lead only” is to be used during the dove hunting season however this was set aside by the state and we are now allowed to hunt doves without lead shot on all land. Any hunting done on public land should be done without lead shot.

A regular license is all you need to hunt doves in Iowa however beginning next year it will be required to have a Federal and/or State Agreement as to the hunting of birds with lead shot. There is still some discrepancy in Iowa whether or not you need lead shot and/or register with the State. It is my understanding that neither the state or federal migratory bird fees are required to hunt doves however you should call 1-855-242-3683 to register for dove hunting in Iowa.

It has been a long haul but it’s been worth it now that we get to hunt doves beginning September 1st – November 9th! As the state agrees, there is an overly abundant amount of doves due to the migratory.
