Thank you for your emails, phone calls and letters regarding a Dove Season in Iowa. I’m happy to announce the fact that Senator Dick Dearden has introduced a bill for an act allowing to “Establish a Season for Hunting Mourning Doves” under Senate File No. 83. All you Dove hunters should call your legislature at the following numbers in order to advise of the fact that you are a pro dove hunter regarding Senate File No. 83. The phone number for the Senate is 515-281-3371 and the phone number for the House of Representatives is 515-281-3221. The only way we will get this matter to the Governor’s desk is by having the Senate and House pass Senate File No. 83. Every indication is that Governor Brandtsad will sign this bill should it appear in his desk.

You should be advised that the “Anti-Dove” people are organizing strongly against the proposed Senate File No. 83 and will be out in numbers trying to discourage the Legislature voting for this dove bill.

As you all know, the Right to Carry, has been amended and signed by the Governor and is presently apart of the Iowa Law regarding Sheriff’s no longer can deny a permit to carry at their discretion, only way it can be denied is for specific reasons which includes: a felony charge, drug / alcohol addictions, domestic violence convictions, being subject to a restraining order, a past commitment to a mental institution, unlawful immigration status and dishonorable discharge from the military. These are the only reasons why a Sheriff would be unable to issue a permit. Of course if they deny a permit, it could be appealed to the Administrative Court Judge. In the past, it had to go to a District Court Judge.

We have to thank the NRA and it’s members for allowing and pushing the Legislature to make this amendment. It being remembered that the Iowa Carry Permit allows for open or concealed carrying of hand guns, rifles, and/or shot guns. This new permit to carry will affect the DNR as far as law enforcement goes, which hasn’t been clarified to this point yet.

I’m still getting a lot of phone calls regarding a lack of pheasant and quail hunting and why we have such a long quail season in Iowa. I enjoy talking to each individual that calls me at my office and respect your opinion on the matter.

Please consider calling the Senate at 515-281-3371 and the House of Representatives at 515-281-3221 regarding your thoughts on a dove season here in Iowa.

It is my understanding that a ban on guns does not apply to City or County Buildings. At this time, this matter is still up in arms as far as the law goes and we’ll keep you posted as to how this turns out.
