Flying solo without Brian Dean tonight, it was time for a look at the very expensive proposal President Obama put forth for reducing the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by making electricity a lot more expensive. I'm not sure this is the legacy he wants to leave behind.

Well, it's a good thing that Nik Wallenda survived his tightrope walk across a stretch of the Grand Canyon tonight, but there's no reason anyone should go into a family business that's clearly insane.
The President is making some kind of announcement on Tuesday about global warming, but whatever it is, let's make sure that it's the best use of whatever funds we decide to deploy on it -- whether that's taxes, government borrowing, or regulations that come with costs of their own. This is a simple if-then question: IF we've decided to spend a great deal of money, THEN we have to spend it wisely, where we can expect a reasonable return on our investment. There's a tough case to be made for big spending on the uncertain returns to anything involving greenhouse gases -- as opposed to some very certain returns we could expect from curing malaria in the developing world, or making driving safer in the rich countries like our own.
