Blank Park Zoo Conservation is announcing a partnership with a team of 27 Ugandan Chimpanzee Ambassadors from the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. One way the Zoo is assisting this team is by asking for the public to donate essential gear and equipment.  “We’re looking for everyday items we take for granted here in Iowa, but can be impossible to find in Uganda,” said Jessie Lowry, conservation coordinator for Blank Park Zoo. “We need items like hiking boots, flashlights, raingear, multipurpose tools, GPS units and cameras.”  The Ugandan team works in the African rainforest monitoring wild chimpanzee troops and other rare animals while protecting them from poaching and capture for the illegal pet trade. They also educate local communities about preservation of habitat and reforestation techniques.  Blank Park Zoo will be collecting and shipping these items to the team in Uganda by the end of the year. To donate items or money, please contact Blank Park Zoo at 515-285-4722. To learn more about the partnership, go to www.blankparkzoo.com/chimps.  To learn more about Pan African Sanctuary Alliance go to: http://www.ngambaisland.org

Thru October 30

My name's Nate Beaird. I'm a local guy who lives in Ankeny, and for my 30th Birthday I'm trying to save 100,000 lives. 2,000 kids under 5yrs old die every DAY from Malaria.
Between now and Oct. 20th, I want to find 10,000 people who will donate $30 for my 30th Bday to World Vision to purchase treated mosquito nets that are the most effective way to combat Malaria. $300,000 will buy 50k nets, and save 100k lives (1 net covers 2 kids).   I've set up a website where people can donate, learn about Malaria, and download graphics for their Facebook or blog.  I've already raised $1,300 from 24 people/families from 10 different states (plus Ukraine) in just 3 weeks. Please help.

Saturday, May 19, bicycle ride across Iowa!  The name of the event is called "AFRAID... Be Fearless!"  The AFRAID stands for "A Faster Ride Across Iowa In a Day," and we thought this title fit us perfectly, as we are so often teaching our adoptees (and our other clients made up of expectant parents, adoptive parents, families in need, etc) to be fearless in life!
One of our board members, who is also a birth father himself, is teaming up with a few of his buddies to bike across Iowa to bring hope to many expectant parents around the state (particularly expectant fathers)...  We will be forming cheer crowds of adoptive families and/or donors along the way to cheer the guys on, and we will be updating Twitter, Facebook, blog, etc. as bikers make the long trek across Iowa!
How can YOU help without having to train to bike 276 miles?
Join us by sponsoring a biker or joining the cheer crowd along the way!  For information: Leah Garland at (515)729-3121 or lgarland@bethany.org

Golfing with an alligator watching may be a normal occurrence in Florida, but that probably has not happened before in Iowa – until now. Iowa’s Blank Park Zoo will hold a charity golf tournament next Monday, May 21 to raise money for the nonprofit Blank Park Zoo Foundation.
The event called “Gators on the Green” will be held at Wakonda Country Club and will feature several of Blank Park Zoo’s American alligators.  “There are many charity golf tournaments held every year, but ours will be unique – where else in Iowa will you be able to see and learn about several zoo creatures while golfing?” said Mark Vukovich, CEO of Blank Park Zoo.
There are still spots available. Registration is available at www.blankparkzoo.com.
