So let me make this really clear. Presidents are not only entitled to vacations, they NEED vacations because as well all know, the job is one that ages them all in often dramatic and speedy ways.
But there are vacations, and then there are vacations! The President chooses to return to his home State of Hawaii and the fact that a big chunk of the country is freezing is not a reason for us to criticize. The reality is that we are just a teeny tiny bit jealous.
But there is a problem – and it’s the problem of 17 days off while most of us will be lucky to get two or three. It’s the problem of the enormous cost – again, not for the First family or even the security, but the length of time creates huge additional fees.
You put this against a backdrop of the country still suffering and you add in how long his security staff is kept away from their families at this time of year and you start to see why this annual trip is a problem for many.
President Reagan used to spend Christmas in DC for the specific reason that he wanted his Secret Service detail to spend as much time with family as was possible. How fast we have moved away from those days of caring.
