(Iowa) -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reminding people not to leave their pumpkins on public land.

The DNR says pumpkin seeds can have negative effects on native plants. Pumpkins can be composted, but the DNR says they should be composted away from residential areas covered with a tarp or in a compost bin, as pumpkins can attract wildlife.

Some communities offer pumpkin pickup services or drop-off sites.
