(Des Moines, IA) -- The vibe on the Iowa State fairgrounds this week is dramatically different than during the 11-day run of the fair, when more than 1.1 million people went thru the gates. State Fair Concessions and Operations director James Romer says starting late Sunday night after the 2023 fair ended, many ride operators and concessionaires began packing up and heading to their next destination.

He says those with booths and exhibits n the Varied Industries building have been clearing out, turning what was a packed building during the fair, to an empty convention space. They have a deadline to do so by the end of the day today (Wednesday).

Romer says everything must be removed from the fairgrounds by this Sunday.

The 2024 Iowa State Fair is August 8-18th.
