(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowans at this year's State Fair submitted nearly 3,000 claims for a half million dollars at the State Treasurer's booth. State Treasurer Roby Smith says the largest was for $24,000. The Great Iowa Treasure hunt aims to reunite owners and heirs with unclaimed property, such as forgotten bank accounts and safe deposit box contents.

Other examples of unclaimed property include stocks, uncashed checked, life insurance policies, and utility refunds. Under Iowa law the assets are turned over to the state after a certain period of time.

“Thousands of fairgoers took advantage of our convenient, easy-to-navigate process to search for themselves, family members, friends and local businesses,” Smith continued. "But there’s no need to wait until next year’s State Fair; search online all year round! New names are continually being added, so even if you have claimed in the past, try searching again.”
