Northern Iowa River Dam Coming Down To Add Recreational Opportunities

(Hardin County, IA) -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is granting about a million dollars to help demolish an Iowa river dam as part of a local park development project.

Local, state and federal partners are arranging demolition of the Steamboat Rock River Dam at Pine Ridge Park in northern Iowa.

It will allow for the development of more catfish habitat at the park, more fishing access in general as well as added river rapids for fishing and tubing.

The dam will be removed in stages to prevent too much sediment from flushing downstream while stabilizing the river banks upstream.

Officials say it will take a couple of years to bring the dam down.
