(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith says the state is currently safeguarding $480 million in abandoned assets, including the contents of nearly 3,000 safe deposit boxes. Smith says the amounts vary widely from a small utility refund or dividend check to up to $1 million dollars. He says some of the forgotten assets are from bank accounts, utility refunds, or insurance checks.

Smith says the state gets about 300 abandoned safe deposit boxes turned over each year

He reminds Iowans to check the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt website for their name or names of loved ones to see if there is an amount listed.

Visitors to the treasurer's booth in the Iowa State Fair's Varied Industries Building can also conduct a search.
