(Des Moines, IA) -- The Des Moines Police Department says one person is in custody after crisis negotiators successfully de-escalated a standoff with an armed suspect.

Police say they received a call around noon from the mother of 34 year-old John Ripperger. Investigators say Ripperger pointed a loaded handgun at his parents and later became physically violent. When officers responded to reports of the assault, police say Ripperger barricaded himself inside a home on Des Moines' southeast side. Crisis negotiators from the multi-jurisdiction Metro STAR Team, based out of the Des Moines Police Department, were able to de-escalate the situation. After about 2 hours, Ripperger agreed to surrender and was taken into custody without incident. He's now facing multiple charges.
