Nebraska lawmakers set to debate trans youth bill, with abortion amendment

(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska lawmakers will debate a the so-called 'Let Them Grow' Act Tuesday night.

The bill would restrict any gender-transitioning medical care for minors in the state of Nebraska. State senators will also debate an abortion amendment that was added to the bill last week. The amendment would restrict abortions in Nebraska after 12 weeks of gestational age, or the first day of a woman's last menstrual period. Opponents of the amendment say due to the wording of 'gestational age' the ban would actually be more of a ten week ban.

Debate on LB 574 is set to get underway at the Nebraska Capitol at 7:00 Tuesday night. Opponents have said they would spend the roughly two hour debate period filibustering. If LB 574 passes Tuesday night's debate, another vote would be required before it is forwarded on to Governor Jim Pillen for his signature. Pillen has indicated he would sign the bill.
