Court adjourns for the day, leaving Vinny Palermo behind bars still

(Lincoln, NE) -- A court hearing on Wednesday adjourns for the day without a ruling on if Omaha City Councilman Vinny Palermo is released from jail.

Judge Cheryl Zwart ruled that Palermo, retired Omaha Police Capt. Richard Gonzalez and Jack Olson should remain in jail until evidence provided during Wednesday's hearing can be thoroughly reviewed. Federal Prosecutors accuse Palermo of accepting luxury gifts and trips, among other things, in exchange for council votes on funding for two police-related non-profits.

Gonzalez, Olson and former Omaha Police officer Johnny Palermo, no relation to the councilman, are accused of misusing funds from the Omaha chapter of the Latino Police Officers Association and Police Athletics for Community Engagement.
