Omaha City Council votes to strip Vinny Palermo of Vice President title

(Omaha, NE) -- After being arrested on federal charges last week, the Omaha City Council votes to strip Councilman Vinny Palermo of his Vice President status.

On Tuesday, the City Council voted 5-0 to temporarily remove Palermo as the Vice President of the council. One Councilmember, Juanita Johnson, cast an "abstain" vote. During Tuesday's meeting, Council President Pete Festersen said he had already stripped Palermo of his committee assignments.

Palermo, along with two former Omaha Police officers, is among four men accused of defrauding two local police-related non-profits. Federal Prosecutors accuse Palermo of accepting luxury gifts and trips, among other things, in exchange for council votes on funding for the non-profits. He's also been on probation since 2019 for failing to file his tax returns.

A due process hearing on a permanent resolution will be will be held during the City Council's meeting next Tuesday.
