(West Des Moines, IA) -- West Des Moines street crews are planning to start a major reconstruction project on 8th Street south of I-235. Crews will be closing sections of 8th Street in stages from north to south, starting this Friday, April 14th.

Crews plan to remove pavement and grade the surface, install new storm sewer structures and pipe to relieve flooding. Crews will also modify watermains and make safety improvements to improve traffic flow.

The intersection of 8th Street and Center Street, including the east bound I-235 on-and-off ramps at that intersection will be closed to all traffic, weather permitting, from 7 p.m. on Friday, April 14, to 6 a.m. on Monday, April 17.

The contractor will then move south, and 8th Street will be closed from just south of Center Street to just north of Office Park Road, for up to 3 months. Signs and detours will direct traffic.

The next step involves closing the intersection of 8th Street and Office Park Road for approximately two weeks, weather permitting. When the intersection is completed, the contractor will reopen the section from Center Street to Office Park Road and close 8th Street from just south of the Office Park Road intersection to north of PPG Paints’ Driveway. This section will remain closed for up to 3 months.

The final stage of the project will close 8th Street south of PPG Paints’ newly constructed driveway to Clegg Road. This stage is anticipated to take up to a month to complete, weather permitting.

The entire project, from Center Street to Clegg Road, is expected to be finished by this December.
