Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo Names Baby Giraffe

(Omaha, NE) -- Hope is the name of the giraffe calf born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium on March 19.

The zoo says Hope has been receiving around-the-care clock from birth because her mother, Zola, was not as attentive as expected. Hope is 8-year-old Zola’s first calf.

The zoo says the calf’s name was inspired by Peg Pease, who has been a volunteer since 1995. They say as soon as they found out Pease had been calling the calf “Hope,” they made it official.

"All of us have been 'hoping' this little girl survives, and our Keepers and Veterinary Care staff are doing great work to make that happen," said Pease. "As we provide 'hope' for this calf, she is also providing 'hope' for us and all of her wild counterparts."

The zoo says Hope will remain in the treatment stall to continue building her strength.
