(Webster City, Iowa) -- The defense rests its case in the trial of the man accused of killing a state trooper during a standoff in Grundy County.

Michael Lang is claiming self defense in the fatal shooting of Sergeant Jim Smith. He's accused of assaulting a trooper, leading law enforcement officers on a chase, then barricading himself inside his home. Smith was shot and killed during the standoff. Officers returned fire, wounding Lang. He's charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and assaulting a peace officer.

Lang did not take the stand, and his defense called no witnesses before resting their case. Closing arguments are expected on Monday, after which the jury will begin deliberation on the verdict.
